Mintabie Opal Fields

Mintabie is located in South Australia right in the heart of Australia approximately halfway between Coober Pedy and Uluru (Ayers Rock). Mintable is thought to have been found around 1919. Australian Aboriginals were selling black opal at Coober Pedy at that time from unknown source. Eventually, Coober Pedy miners located it along and escarpment 350km northeast of Coober Pedy.

Small-scale mining was carried out intermittently from 1931, but because of the hard sandstone, harsh conditions and lack of water, there was little production until 1976 when heavy earth moving moved into the area finding quite a large amount of opal. Since then Mintabie has continued to grow and today is one of the most significant opal fields in Australia.

Mintabie produces a wide range of colours and types of opal including crystal opal, white opal and the very rear black opal. Mineshaft has mined opal from several clams across Mintabie and has available most of the different types of opal found at Mintabie.

Rainbow Mine

The rainbow mine is located approximately 200km northwest of Quilpie in southwest Queensland in the heart of the border opal mining area. The rainbow mine was only recently discovered in 1993 and it's potential is yet to be realised.

The variety and colour of the opal make the deposit an exciting prospect and Pete believes it will produce opal for many years to come. The mine produces many types of opal and magnificent opal specimens. Mineshaft is the sole miner at the Rainbow mine so come into our shop and buy opal direct from the miner and cutter.
